Imagine you work for a certain government regulatory agency, and you receive an anonymous letter full of stuff like this:
My army special operations background trained me to build intelligence networks, collect intelligence reports from field operatives, devise lists of additional questions to fill in the blanks, analyze the data, and send draft reports for review and error correction before submission to [your agency].
In order to minimize the risk of discovery of our activities and the potential threat of harm to me and to my team, I submitted reports to [your agency] without signing them.
Would you a) follow up on it immediately, since clearly he must be on to something; or b) enter it into your office pool “Kook of the Month” competition?
Markopolos Testimony (page 3)
Don’t get me wrong. For a $50 billion multi-decade Ponzi scheme to have happened right under their noses, the S.E.C. should be eviscerated. But this guy — who testifies before Congress tomorrow at 9:30 Eastern, by the way — comes across as a bit of a crank.
I will definitely set my Tivo to record the testimony.
